Troposperic Ozon Monitoring Instrument
Tropomi Spectral Chart

Objective

The main purpose of the OVF Operations Verification Facility (OVF) is to support instrument operations development, verification and training. In the OVF the EuroSim Real Time Simulator (RTS) simulates the instrument units (detector modules, calibration units). This allows execution and verification of TROPOMI operations. The OVF will provide representative responses to TROPOMI operational timelines.

Context

The TROPospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) is a sun-backscatter imaging spectrometer. The objective of TROPOMI is to provide accurate and timely observations of key species for atmospheric composition, for services on air quality, climate and the ozone layer. The daily global observations of TROPOMI will be used for improving air quality forecasts as well as for monitoring the concentrations of atmospheric constituents over multiple years.

TROPOMI is the single instrument on board ESA's Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite. It will monitor the Earth air quality and climate by means of accurate UV-VIS-NIR-SWIR spectroscopic measurements of atmospheric constituents like O3, NO2, SO2, CH4, CO, CH2O, and aerosol properties.

Role of EuroSim

Tropomi Rack

EuroSim is the central simulation infrastructure for the verification facilities of the Tropomi instrument. It is used in two configurations:

  • Realtime simulator

Purpose: Simulation of instrument units (detector modules, calibration units) and the on-board clock

  • SimAIT

Purpose: The main purpose of the SimAIT configuration is to allow AIT and Calibration test sequence development and debugging without the need of real TROPOMI hardware. The SimAIT facility is similar to OVF but also includes (simple) EGSE models to allow test sequences to be run without modifications
